Vanjeri Grandhavari

From the archives of a noble Nambudiri Brahmin family of Trikkandiyur in Tirur, this remarkable collection unfolds before us the living fabric of a bygone age. Here are inscribed the chronicles of land and livelihood, of rights and responsibilities, of laws sacred and secular – woven into the rhythms of everyday life. They reveal how a society negotiated its order, how temples stood not only as spiritual centre but also as the heart of agrarian existence, and how the enduring principles of Classical Hindu Law guided the course of human affairs with quiet authority.

It is through the unerring vision and meticulous scholarship of the late M.G.S. Narayanan (1932–2025) – a historian of rare distinction and one of Kerala’s most celebrated interpreters of the past – that these records are brought into the light of modern study. With patience, precision, and profound insight, he has transformed a family’s archival treasure into a gateway for all who seek to understand the history of Kerala and its place within the grand mosaic of Indian civilisation.

There is no substitute for history, nor for the meticulous care that true historical research demands. In this regard, Prof. M.G.S. Narayanan remains a shining example. It is with deep reverence and gratitude that we present this new edition of his distinguished work, Vanjeri Grandhavari. The late M.G.S. Narayanan, a historian of great renown, devoted his life to enriching our understanding of the past through his profound scholarship. Before his passing, he entrusted us with the honour of bringing out this edition – a responsibility we hold with the greatest respect, as a tribute to his enduring legacy.
As per his express wish, this edition remains untouched and unaltered, a faithful replica of the original version published earlier by University of Calicut. We have made no changes, additions, or omissions, thereby preserving the author’s words in their original form.

With deep respect, we dedicate this edition to the enduring memory of Prof. M.G.S. Narayanan, whose legacy continues to inspire scholars and readers alike.
